Account book and letter book, 1775-1812.

Account book, 1775-1783, and letterbook, 1783-1812, kept by Jonathan Lawrence of New York City, principally related to his activities as a businessman and New York State Commissioner employed in various capacities by the Continental Army and state government. Account book includes a detailed listing of traveling and work related expenses incurred by Lawrence while forwarding drafts from New York to Easton, Pennsylvania, to join General Washington's army; while employed as Salt Commissioner for New York; and while tending to a mine in Dutchess County, New York, and paying the wages of mine employees. Also included are personal accounts and receipts for payment of rent and the purchase and occasional sale of drygoods, butter, salt, indigo, spirits, etc. as well as accounts for the joint acquisition of a farm and mill in Dover, New York, purchased with his business partner, Nathaniel Tom. The letterbook contains copies of letters pertaining to Lawrence's activities as a merchant in New York which included the shipment and sale of goods such as flour, wheat, lumber, rum, sugar, geneva, etc., to and from the West Indies and England, land sales, and the collection or payment of debts owed by and to various associates. Also included is a lengthy inventory of goods ordered by Lawrence and Tom from various English firms to be shipped to New York on account. Frequent correspondents include: Jacob W. Hallell, John Whiting, and John Addams.
